Low Temp Dabbing: The Perfect Temperature for Dab Potency and Flavor

Why Temperature Matters When Dabbing?

The temperature control is so important when dabbing as few degrees up or down can totally change the taste and flavour of your favourite concentrates.

Indeed, terpenes, compounds in cannabis that give the plant its unique smell, and cannabinoids are extremely sensitive to temperature.
Every terpene is unique in the therapeutic benefits it offers and the flavours it produces, and each individual terpene has its own sensitivity to heat. Therefore, the temperature at which you dab concentrates greatly affects both the flavour profile and the synergy created between the concentrated cannabinoids and terpenes.

High Temperature VS Low Temperature

High Temperature

Dabbing at high temperature (1000 degrees) is intuitive for most dabbers. The intensity of the heat corresponds with thick vapour that will yield the maximum effect of your concentrate. Most of the time it is achieved thanks to a torch heating the nail. For the dabbers that put a premium on maximum impact, high temp dabbing would probably be the preferred method.

Low Temperature

The sweet spot for vaporisation is between 315-450 °F.  Low temperatures allow getting more of the concentrate flavour with minimum irritation of the lungs. To successfully dab at low temperatures, it’s practically necessary to have a carb cap (a cover that goes over your nail). The carb cap allows for you to catch the vapour that could escape from the nail when it’s at low temperatures.

For dabbers who want a leisurely smoking experience, low temp dabs will likely be the most satisfying. Since they take longer to heat, ceramic nails are optimal for primarily low temp dabbers.

Temperature Guide

0-300°F: Too low
Result in minimal vaporization of available cannabinoids and terpenes – you will not be consuming anywhere near all the concentrate dropped on the nail. Expect the concentrate to leave a puddle of oil that produces little vapour (waste it to taste it).

315-450°F: Low temp dab
This is the sweet spot for vaporization of all cannabinoids and terpenes while retaining maximum flavour. Dabbing at this temperature will produce a smooth hit that is relatively easy on the lungs. The effects will be pleasant but milder than at hotter temperatures.

450-600°F: Medium temp dab
This is a nice middle ground for those seeking both a stronger flavour and effect. At this temperature, a mix of vaporization and combustion occurs.

600-900°F: High temp dab
At this temperature, the nail may still be red hot and combustion is certain to occur. This will produce a harsh, intense hit with thick smoke. Most of the flavour will be lost at this temperature, resulting in a dab that tastes slightly burnt.

900+°F: Burning the dab

We don’t recommend taking dabs at this temperature – it is not pleasant.

How To Find The Perfect Temperature for Dabs on an E-nail?

Luckily, the emergence of electric nails, or e-nails, has given concentrate connoisseurs the opportunity to fine-tune their experience much more accurately.

An electric nail offers the ability to efficiently maintain the heat at a low temperature that allows you to capture the full flavour and benefits of the terpenes.

Electric nails, like the E-nail from Green Light Vapes, make dabbing concentrates much easier and more precise. You’re able to optimize your experience to the temperature you prefer using variable heat controller to stabilize the temperature of your dabbing surface.

What matters is the temperature of the nail surface. You have to get to know your e-nail in particular, as your friend’s suggested dabbing temperature may be significantly too hot/cold for you.

The important thing to note with e-nails is that there is a disparity between the temperature setting on the unit and the actual dabbing surface temperature. Meaning that although the heating unit is set to 680°F, the dabbing surface may only be 600°F.

Its digital display in combination with proper calibration allows for consistent temperatures and thus consistent vapor. The stability and control that the Mini Nail offers avoids the peaks and valleys of fluctuating temperatures from heating and cooling down your nail. It also maintains fixed to keep you from wasting your dabs as they puddle when your nail is too cold to vaporize.
